The Church has a calendar which tends to be ecumenical, observed throughout most of Christianity. Most but not all. The purpose of the Calendar is to keep us centered on the Gospel, the story of Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection. It does this by prescribing the readings for any given Sunday and holiday.
